The idea of Diaspora Coffee & Chai Co. was hatched in early 2015 when two guys from two different worlds met at a coffee shop. Both wanting to use their experience in the coffee industry to empower the community they love - the refugees and immigrants. Sam a recent immigrant from a remote corner of India and Jesse a native of Oregon discovered they held the same vision: to start a cafe giving dispersed people skills to thrive in their new home.
Today we are ready to take the first small step toward a huge and exciting endeavor. Sam currently is the lead roaster for a local specialty coffee company in Portland and Jesse works for the same company while teaching TESOL and finishing his Masters in Linguistics. We are launching our first stage of operation as an online and local retailer for fresh roasted single origin coffee beans. We are on the road to bring about change for a great cause through great coffee.
Our Mission is to empower refugees and immigrants who are starting a new life here in Portland, Oregon. It is a real struggle to secure a job without having prior work experience, let alone a lack of language. Our purpose is to bridge that gap.
We are starting Diaspora Coffee with the hope and goal of opening a brick and mortar store front. Once we secure our first cafe, we will provide 3 to 6 months of in-depth job skills and English training, while creating a positive environment for cultural integration for our aspirant candidates. Through networking and partnerships with local cafes and restaurants our employees will then be placed in jobs throughout the city.
We buy our green coffee beans from ethically sourced importers that promote Direct and Fair Trade to give the coffee farmers the benefits they deserve. All the coffee we offer is single origin.
Single Origin is best explained through the words of Andra Vlaicu at Speciality Coffee Association of Europe, “The most important thing about single origin is its traceability, the fact that you know exactly where your coffee is from and that it’s a specific coffee, not a blend. Usually of a higher quality, it’s the acknowledgment that the coffee is from a particular farm located in a unique setting, whilst its flavour depicts its origin, possessing characteristics of that specific area where the particular coffee was grown.”
At Diaspora Coffee it is our goal to bring out the distinct flavor that a particular coffee from a particular farm has to offer. We treat every coffee with respect. We pay close attention to every batch, hand roasted in small batches and handpicked for blemishes. We hope you enjoy our coffee as much as we do.
